Nothing CEO Carl Pei Hints at Developing a Unique Mobile OS

Speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt 2024, Carl Pei, CEO and founder of Nothing, hinted at the possibility of the company building its own mobile operating system. He mentioned that Nothing is exploring what a "true Nothing OS" may look like, with an emphasis on offering a fresh alternative amidst the duopoly of Google and Apple. "We’re thinking about how we maneuver here," he said, "and maybe create something of our own. Some kind of operating system."

Shifting Focus to Software for Enhanced User Experience

“Now you can make an impact on the software side,” Pei explained. “You can change how people use their devices. On the business side, it’s also very lucrative. In some ways, it kind of sucks to be a hardware company, with the supply chain, high capex, low margins, and high risk for product market fit. In a lot of ways, having some software revenue is a lot more comfortable: higher margins. But I think the most important thing is still to satisfy the consumer.”

Emphasis on User Experience over Lower OS Stack

Pei noted that Nothing would focus on innovating the user experience rather than the lower levels of the OS stack. "If you think about the tech stack for what an OS is, I don’t think we need to work on the lower parts of the stack — drivers, hardware connections, and the kernel. We should focus on the user experience, because operating systems haven’t really changed for 40 years. These devices hold so much information, but they don’t leverage any of it to improve the experience."

AI Integration in Nothing OS

Nothing plans to incorporate advanced AI capabilities into Nothing OS, according to Pei. He believes that AI has simplified OS development, making it an essential part of the process, though not the main feature. "We shouldn’t call it the AI operating system,” he said. “AI is just a tool, and ultimately, success depends on creating the best product, achieving the best market fit, and getting the highest user satisfaction. In the absence of that, it’s just not going to work.”
